GUIDED TOURS

Before our exhibition HALLENKUNST – ART IN TRANSIT AND BEYOND opened its doors to the public from August 28 to October 12, 2025, it offered a deep insight into a subculture and immersed visitors in a world many had not even known existed before. The exhibition was preceded by a two-year artists-in-residence program in the CAMMANN Studios, during which more than 30 artists developed their contributions to HALLENKUNST. These works were created across a wide range of media, including canvas, wood and glass, photography, and installations.

More than ten artists and collectives also stepped into the public realm, creating large-scale facade artworks throughout the city that directly relate to the works shown in the exhibition. Examples include murals by Claudia 'MadC' Walde from Dresden, Bond Truluv from Leipzig, and Jan Kaláb from Prague. Their canvas and wood works formed the basis for the facade designs at Johannisplatz in Chemnitz.

These works, along with ten additional facade artworks and installations in public space, are—together with the 500-page HALLENKUNST catalogue—key elements of the project, ensuring its lasting visibility and accessibility.

Behind all of the artworks and murals lie fascinating and compelling stories, which we would like to share with you during our public guided tours—right at the locations where the murals were created. This led to the idea of offering monthly, in-depth up to three-hour tours that make the art tangible and convey an understanding of how the HALLENKUNST mural art program is curated and realized.

Have you ever wondered why some walls in the city look like colourful patchwork quilts made of artwork? Why do some artists choose to paint their works on concrete instead of going to a studio? What is the difference between street art, murals and graffiti? How has the graffiti scene managed to evolve in recent years – from criminal vandalism to artistic expression?  Then you’ve come to the right place. We’ll take you on an exciting journey through colours and history. The Johannesplatz and city centre is now one of Chemnitz’ most remarkable street art locations. Breathtaking murals await you, telling stories of rebellion, freedom and love.  During the tour, you will gain an insight into the world of urban art. Learn about the different styles and forms of mural art and find out more about the history behind the individual artworks and the artists behind them.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE GUIDED TOUR

Embark on an exciting journey of discovery with our tour guides:

  • Discover one of the German city center with the highest concentration of murals

  • A guided experience with background informations of the HALLENKUNST mural artworks and the artists

  • Learn to see the city centre and nearby areas with different eyes– as a place where art reinterprets the past

  • Discover how street art & graffiti have evolved – from their subcultural beginnings to becoming a recognised art form

  • Understand the differences between graffiti, murals and other urban styles

The tour begins at the Freie Presse headquarters in the city centre of Chemnitz, where numerous HALLENKUNST artworks are on display that form the basis for later mural realizations. Here, you will receive a guided tour of a temporary pop-up exhibition featuring works by Claudia “MadC” Walde, Doppeldenk, the NIZA Collective, Bond Truluv, Video&Sckre, and many more.

Afterwards, the tour continues into the public space at Johannisplatz, where murals by Claudia “MadC” Walde, Jan Kaláb, and Bond Truluv can be seen. Just a few meters further, in the direction of one of Chemnitz’s most well-known landmarks—the Red Tower (Roter Turm)—we visit a memorial mural dedicated to the Chemnitz DJ, musician, and artist Kid Gringo, who passed away in 2025.

From there, we head towards Getreidemarkt, where you will learn more about the mural created by the NIZA Collective from Berlin. The tour then continues by our bus to Leipziger Straße, offering a glimpse into the red-and-white letter world of SweetUno from Heidelberg, before moving on toward Chemnitz-Glösa, home to the city’s largest mural, created by Hendrik Beikirch from Koblenz.

Now, as we continue our tour, we would like to briefly invite you into the spaces of the HALLENKUNST artist residency, giving you a look inside and welcoming you for a coffee at CAMMANN Studios—one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. This is not only where the HALLENKUNST exhibition was planned, but also where many of the artworks shown in the exhibition were created.

The next stop is Chemnitz Brühl, where two facade artworks from the HALLENKUNST mural program can be found—by ARDA from Chemnitz and HERA from Frankfurt. We then pass Chemnitz Central Station and the light installation “Fürchtet euch nicht” (“Do Not Be Afraid”) by Doppeldenk, before heading to Sonnenberg, where the Justin Sonder Memorial Mural by Falk “Akut” Lehmann is located. The final stop, at the foot of Sonnenberg on Uferstraße, tells a story jointly presented by Greenpeace Germany and the artist collective Video&Sckre: MATANG. The guided tour concludes back at the Freie Presse Mediengruppe.
