PUBLIC MURAL ART PROGRAM

Public art is a powerful tool for creating a sense of place and strengthening our community. Art can attract us to public spaces, enliven our neighbor- hoods, enhance our experiences in parks, inform us about the history and peoples of our place, and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity.

From September 2024 till July 2025, the City of Chemnitz and various private property owners voted to allow public art murals in Chemnitz exempt from the sign code; however, a permitting process will still apply.

The HALLENKUNST Mural Program was created to make Chemnitz neighborhoods more attractive, instill a sense of pride, provide employment for local and international artists in their own field, combat Street-and Mural Art in neighborhoods, and engage young people in the beautification of their own communities. Working with the artists, neighborhood groups, associations and funding sources, the HALLENKUNST Curatorship works with local and inter- national mural artists who have experience in this field and working with communities. Every artist involved in the Public Mural program provides a link to the artwork or performance realized within the Artists-In-Residency Program on display at the > HALLENKUNST exhibition in October 2025.
