FÜRCHTET EUCH NICHT x DOPPELDENK

Since today a large yellow neon lights installation at Chemnitz Central Station greeting visitors with the words: "FÜRCHTET EUCH NICHT" (DON'T BE AFRAID). These words are more than just letters; they carry a rich history.

During the GDR era, religion and communist state ideology were in fundamental opposition. The SED dictatorship viewed religious communities as ideological rivals. Despite this, churches remained spaces of freedom and sanctuary within the dictatorship. Many opposition activities during the autumn of the 1989 revolution originated in these very places.

"FÜRCHTET EUCH NICHT" was a call to courage, a testament to hope. Today, this message serves as a reminder that change is possible.

The work by the artist duo DOPPELDENK from Chemnitz and Leipzig, is part of the HALLENKUNST Public Mural and Artist Residency Program. It is also linked to the group exhibition featuring works by both artists on display from August 28th to August 31st, 2025 for the opening weekend, or during opening hours until September 21st, 2025.
