THE HALLENKUNST PUBLIC MURAL ART PROGRAM KICKS OFF

Between September 25th and October 2nd, 2024, street artist Claudia 'MadC' Walde will inaugurate the Public Mural Art Program of HALLENKUNST 2025 with a facade design at Johannisplatz 01 in Chemnitz.

As part of the Public Mural Art Program, eight more facades and public spaces in Chemnitz will be designed by international artists till July 2025. The motifs of the artworks are part of the HALLENKUNST Artists-in-Residency Program, which involves more than 70 international artists exhibited in the final group exhibition at the Chemnitz Markthalle October 2025.

THE ARTIST

Claudia Walde, better known by her pseudonym MadC, studied at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle, Germany and at Central Saint Martins College in London, UK.

In 1998, she began using spray paint to adorn walls first in her hometown and later worldwide in more than 35 countries with her abstract art. She is currently one of the world's most renowned graffiti artists. Her works can be found in Germany, Spain, South Africa, Mexico, Hong Kong, the Czech Republic, Sweden, the USA, Great Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, France, and Greece, among others.

Her canvases are exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, such as at the Sinkka Art and Museum Center in Kerava,Finland, the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, and as part of the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia, USA.

The theme of writing runs through the entire work of the Dresden-based artist in an abstract form. She always strives to create energetic connections and networks. Transparencies and luminous colors dominate Claudia Walde's paintings.Using spray paint, watercolor, and acrylic, the artist continually creates new tensions between writing and abstraction.

THE ARTWORK

The idea and motivation for designing the facade arose in connection with her artist residency at the Chemnitz Cammann Studios in August 2024. This residency was part of the framework program of the exhibition project HALLENKUNST and the artist MadC was invited by the curator René Kästner in spring 2024.

The design of the artwork titled "TGIF" involves both the wall surfaces of the building. The view from the Red Tower and the Straße der Nationen is to be designed with abstract pictorial compositions whose lines converge perspectively at one point. The basis of the artwork is a series of canvases, which will be exhibited in the Markthalle Chemnitz in October 2025 as part of HALLENKUNST 2025.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to the Kellnbergergruppe for providing the gable and for their cooperation in the preparations for the artistic design. "We are delighted that MadC's graffiti art has finally found a suitable location in Chemnitz after a long search Johannisplatz will thus become an outdoor gallery, showcasing urban, colorful, and vibrant art that is a great addition to Chemnitz and will gain recognition far beyond the city limits"

(Michael Stötzer, Mayor of Construction, City of Chemnitz)
